Kevin Hendley: From Master Butcher to Artistic Visionary

We are thrilled to introduce Kevin Hendley, the latest addition to Red Eight's growing family of emerging artists. Kevin's journey into the world of contemporary art is as unique as his creations.

Hailing from a coal mining family in Derbyshire, Kevin's life took an unexpected turn when he spent a decade honing his skills as a master butcher. In the 1990s, he decided to embark on a new chapter by moving to London, where he pursued a degree in fine art at Central Saint Martin's. The pivotal moment in Kevin's career occurred in 1993 when his talent was unmissable at his end-of-year show, catching the eye of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, who offered him the esteemed position of artist in residence.

For several years, Kevin had the privilege of capturing the day-to-day life within the opera house. His subjects ranged from captivating performances to behind-the-scenes moments, even tracing the steps of legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti from rehearsals to the grand operatic productions. His classical-inspired creations graced the covers of Royal Opera House brochures, and he received an exhibition showcasing the body of work he had meticulously crafted throughout his residency.

Today, Kevin's distinctive paintings are in high demand in both the UK and international art scenes. They are coveted by collectors and investors alike. His primary focus has often been portraiture, a genre deeply influenced by the techniques of the Old Masters. Kevin's dedication to the craft led him to spend years studying these iconic works at the National Gallery, refining his skills.

Kevin's artistic vision is a captivating blend of observations from the vibrant streets of London and Brighton. He spends afternoons sketching and taking candid photographs, infusing his creations with humour and pathos. He then reimagines these individuals within a slightly surreal world and paints these theatrical characters using oils on wood, complete with his handcrafted frames.

His artwork is rich, intense, and thought-provoking, with one foot grounded in the old world of masters such as Delaroche, Rubens, Ribera, Guido Reni, and Caravaggio. Simultaneously, he playfully and boldly ventures into the contemporary world, infusing his pieces with a twist of anarchic affection. Kevin Hendley's work is a truly unique and captivating journey through the realms of artistry and makes a fine addition to any art enthusiast's collection.
