Red Eight’s Tommy Gurr Presents 'Sign Language'

Red Eight Gallery is beyond thrilled to be representing Kent-based visual artist Tommy Gurr and to be giving our clients a unique opportunity to acquire some of his awe-inspiring imaginative works.

After attending Kent Institute of Art and Design (KIAD) and The University for Creative Arts (UCA), Tommy combined his passion for art with his love for travelling, taking him across the globe. His stencil murals can be spotted from Camden to Cambodia, where he held the title of Artist in Residence for a significant portion of 2015 and 2016, producing over 60 murals.

Tommy has collaborated with Henley Festival, creating several large-scale artworks and performing 'live paint' exhibitions for festival-goers during the Festival and at Paddington Station, London.

Influenced by Contemporary and Urban Art, Tommy continues to surprise by employing contrast and imagination, creating striking original pieces and bringing his love for unconventional canvases to the gallery environment.

‘I have been producing my recent work on genuine disused signs, giving something rusty, aged, and even bullet-ridden a new life. A used sign to me is a unique canvas, sometimes with 20 years of wear, tear, and imperfections, each one telling a story of its own...I love how no two can ever be the same.’

While completing a 4500km unsupported cycle ride from Perth to Sydney in 2017, raising funds and awareness for Mental Health Charity Mind, Tommy collected a wide selection of disused and abandoned signs found along the roadside. Now, eighteen months after the trip, Tommy returns to the UK this June to present his latest work, incorporating many of the signs he personally salvaged, in a solo exhibition at Graffik Gallery titled ‘Sign Language’.
