Red Eight’s Will Teather Takes Magical Realism To New Heights

We’re excited to announce that one of Red Eight’s most unique, imaginative British artists, Will Teather, has released a new collection of captivating paintings, which we're sure our clients will love.

Experts in the field have applauded Teather; Art historian Laura Williams says his work is “arresting, heart-stopping and exquisitely executed”, while Neil Powell, Academic & writer for Wall Street International, comments, “as we are shifted between romanticism and classicism, we are left entranced, entertained and certainly captivated by the uncertainties.”

Growing up in rural Norfolk, surrounded by religious imagery and books on historical painting, Teather refined his knowledge of contemporary art through periods of study in London at Central St Martins and Chelsea College of Art & Design. However, his skill as a painter remains largely self-taught through personal experimentation and his close inspection of masterpieces from major museums.

In 2007, Teather was selected to be the inaugural Artist-in-Residence for Aberdeen Arts Centre, after which he spent over three years as the Artist-in-Residence for the Anteros Arts Foundation. Over the last fifteen years, Teather’s paintings and drawings have featured in over 200 gallery exhibitions across the UK and worldwide.

Teather’s talents don’t just stop with painting. Also a musician, the multi-talented artist has fronted a succession of bands over the last ten years, with his most recent venture, Vicars of Stiffkey: a psych-rock band, signing to a record label, Off With Their Records, with their debut album released in 2017.  The artist’s interest in theatre and music has often influenced his painting style and led to various other collaborations, including theatre groups such as Les Enfants Terrible, Hocus Pocus Theatre, and singers Ana Silvera and Andrew Plummer.

Teather's latest collection “Moonage Daydream”, takes inspiration from the back allies of circus and theatre communities, depicting the curious characters seemingly carried away by their own through and visions. The artworks, at times, evoke a sense of transcendence, and, at other times, anarchy.

The paintings “ are based upon performers I have met, often drawn from the fringes of circus and theatre communities,” says Teather. “Often, the models appear at my studio in their stage outfits and bring props from their life as a performer.”

In 2010, Teather co-founded The Chelsea Collective, an international art group made up of postgraduate alumni of Chelsea College of Art and Design, which has exhibited in the UK and USA.  In 2011, the artist joined the board of Directors of the Anteros Arts Foundation before leaving the role in 2015 to co-found Art Fair East, a major art fair for the East of England.

Influenced by magical realism and lifting motifs from diverse sources such as Flemish still life, baroque art and Weimar painters, the artist enters into direct conversation with the history of painting with the aim of bringing a contemporary sensibility to the table. As Green Pebble Publishing put it, Teather’s work “is theatre, storytelling and art, woven into a single painting.”

“Moonage Daydream”  focuses on a sense of escape, with his subjects having transcendental experiences that take them out of themselves. Teather says, “I enjoy the transformative power of painting: the way dolls and props become more real and the power to play with space, perspective and gravity.
